Over 20 years of clinical experience treating people affected by addictions and mental health difficulties
Suzette Glasner, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor at the University of California, in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and completed her post-doctoral education at University of California at San Diego and the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System. Her research focuses on making evidence-based treatments for addiction more accessible using digital health platforms, and she serves as Chief Scientific Officer at Pelago, a digital substance use management clinic. Her psychotherapy practice includes adults, couples and families, and draws on the most well-studied therapy techniques for a range of conditions.
Funded by the National Institutes on Drug Abuse and Alcoholism & Alcohol Abuse for the past 17 years
This important research has focused on:
Developing and testing digitally delivered behavioral treatments for addictions and related psychiatric and medical conditions,
Understanding and addressing stigma as a barrier to engaging in treatment for addictions and related health conditions; and
Discovering the “key ingredients” of psychotherapy, or how psychotherapy helps people to change their behavior.
Three evidence-based treatment approaches have been the focus of her research studies: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), and mindfulness based treatments. She has developed and is evaluating, in clinical trials, technology-based treatments that deliver evidence-based behavioral therapy and medications using smartphone apps, text messaging, social media, and other digital platforms.
'7 Steps to Addiction Recovery,' explained in Dr. Glasner's award winning book
Dr. Glasner’s book, The Addiction Recovery Skills Workbook (New Harbinger, 2015), integrates her scientific knowledge about the causes and most effective treatments for addictions, and more than a decade of clinical experience treating individuals and families who are affected by addictions and mental health difficulties. Based on the latest research findings in the neurobiology of alcohol and drug addiction, Dr. Glasner demystifies the reasons why people with addictions find themselves in a trap, repeating behaviors that are devastatingly self-destructive, and offers practical tools to enable the addict to achieve and sustain a life of recovery.
Drawing on the best of addiction science, Dr. Glasner presents the 7 steps to addiction recovery, a new, individualized approach that enables the addict to choose a unique combination of skills and strategies that pave the way to long-term success in recovery and healthy living.
